Monument

Onslow Ford

Erection date: 18/7/1903

Inscription

{On the south face of the monument, below the muse, in bronze letters attached to the stone:}
To Edward Onslow Ford RA
Erected by his friends and admirers

{On the main section of the obelisk, north face:}
MDCCCLII - MCMI {1852 - 1901}

{On the ribbons:}
To thine own self be true.

{Below his lapel:}
A. C. Lucchesi, 1903

The monument was designed by Simpson. The Muse (naked lady) on the south face is a copy of Ford's own (for the ). Lucchesi, one of his assistants, created the garlanded portrait bust on the north. The quote is from Hamlet.

We wonder if we misread the date "1906" on the sculpture, since it conflicts with the date for the erection, 1903, which we have found in two independent sources.
