The Parish Church of St Georges Bloomsbury
Built 1720 - 30. Architect: Nicholas Hawksmoor (former pupil and assistant of Sir Christopher Wren).
The top of the tower is a reproduction of the tomb of Mausolus, erected at Halicarnassus in 353BC & is depicted in Hogarth's famous 'Gin Lane.'
The church is the scene of the 'Bloomsbury Christening' in Dickens' 'Sketches by Boz'.
Antony Trollope, the novelist, and Richard Benson founder of the Cowley Fathers were baptised and the parents of Sidney Smith, the wit, were married here.
