Our colleague, Andrew Behan, has found that William John Abernethy was a 4th Class Fireman, serving in the Metropolitan Fire Brigade when he died on 10 June 1892. His death was registered as aged 29 years in the 2nd quarter of 1892 in the Islington Registration District, London, which would mean he had been born circa 1863.

Probate records state that his address had been Fire Engine House, Seven Sisters Road, Holloway, London and that he died on 10 June 1892 at 42 Hargreave Park, Upper Holloway, London. Administration of his estate was granted on 10 September 1892 to Robert Thomas Abernethy, a labourer and his effects totalled £55-0s-0d. 

He is shown as 'W. J. ABERNETHY' on the London Fire Brigade Memorial in Highgate Cemetery, Swain's Lane, London, N6. He is also commemorated on the National Firefighters Memorial in Sermon Lane, London, EC4, on the and on the .
