Awarded the VC for his heroism on 12 September 1918, age 33, while serving in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. "When his company was held up, on his own initiative he rushed ahead four times, each time successfully capturing guns, displaying exceptional valour, judgement and initiative. (Laventie, France)".
