The English branch of the League was established in 1900 by Miss A L Woodward; she continued to direct its activities until her death in 1921." "The Fourth Triennial International Congress of the World League Against Vivisection and for the Protection of Animals, as it was then known, was held at Caxton Hall, Westminster, London, from 19 to 24 July, 1909."

Andrew Behan has kindly researched this lady: Anna Louisa Woodward was born about 1840 and died a spinster, aged 80 years, on 4 March 1921 according to probate records. She had been living at 14 Bonchurch Road, North Kensington and her estate totalled £7,285-15s-10d.
