Barbara Harmer

The first qualified female supersonic pilot and the first to fly Concorde.

Born at the house with the plaque, she was raised in Bognor Regis and left school aged 15 to become a hairdresser but then became an air traffic controller. She gained her private pilot's licence and then in May 1982 her commercial pilot's licence, but it took her over 100 applications before she gained a job as a pilot. Wonder why that was?

On 25 March 1993 Harmer became the first qualified female Concorde pilot and later that year made her first Concorde flight as First Officer to New York City.

Died Chichester.
