Camille Silvy

Camille-Léon-Louis Silvy was a French photographer, primarily active in London.

Born in Nogent-le-Rotrou, France. He became a member of the Société Française de Photographie before moving to London. He set up a studio in Bayswater and photographed members of the royal family, and many personalities of the time. Returning to France in 1868, he believed his nervous system had been damaged by excessive exposure to potassium cyanide whilst developing photographs. It is more likely that he was suffering with manic depression, and he spent the last thirty years of his life in hospitals and convalescent homes. Died in Saint-Maurice.
