Charles de Gaulle

Charles de Gaulle

Born Lille, France. Height 6 ft, 5 inches, nicknamed La Grande Asperge (the tall asparagus). President of France 1958-69. Just like Queen Wilhelmina, while in London he used the BBC to send popular messages of resistance back to his country. A supreme case of nominative determinism? See Isambard Kingdom Brunel for others.
