Charles Melville Hays

Railway president. Born in Rock Island, Illinois. He started working on the railroads at the age of 17, and progressed through the business, eventually becoming the General Manager of the Grand Trunk Railway of Canada. Travelling on the RMS Titanic, he deplored the way shipping companies were vying for custom with increasingly faster vessels, he is reputed to have said 'the time will come soon when this trend will be checked by some appalling disaster'. After the sinking, his body was recovered and he was buried in Montreal.
