Constance Baker

Constance Baker

Dressmaker. Born as Constance Kitteringham in Marham, Norfolk. Lived with her mother's grandparents, the Kitteringhams, but when her mother married Constance took her mother's married name, Gunn.

By 1881 Constance's mother, new father and some new siblings had moved to Islington.  By 1891 she had became a dress maker and the family was living in Pimlico. By 1901 Constance had married John Baker who had various jobs, one of which was as a theatre attendant. Through his connections, she had regular employment in making costumes for the stage.

The couple had many children, mainly girls. Their eldest son, John Gilbert was killed in 1917 at Passchendaele, and his death inspired them to open up their home in Fulham to help troops returning from the front. They also arranged entertainments for the soldiers in Bishop’s Park Fulham.

Her gravestone bears the inscription 'Mother of the Wounded'. was erected in 2019 on the Marham Village Hall - the cake prepared for the unveiling party was amazing!
