Councillor Henry E. Davenport

Councillor Henry E. Davenport

Mayor of Hackney 1912-13. Member of the Metropolitan Water Board.

From the , referring to a large, low building stretching from Fouldon Road to the back of the Ambassador BP service station in Stoke Newington Road: "The building went up in 1904 as a confectionary {sic} factory, built on the success of owner Henry E Davenport’s sweet shop at 136 Kingsland High Street. Henry Davenport went on the become the Mayor of Hackney and was later knighted.."

The building is currently (2023) labelled on Google Maps as 'La Bell Cuisine' but does not look very active. Before 2012 it operated as Mellow Mix and Blend, an informal Caribbean arts centre. It was then brought back to life by Total Refreshment Centre, "home to London’s flourishing jazz scene .. a labyrinthine collection of rooms within a Victorian warehouse ..".

In 2022 the sweet shop premises were occupied by Circle Collective.

A man with this name was Sherriff of London in 1927 and was knighted in 1928. That's probably our man.
