Civil servant and charity founder. Born at 12 Cunnock Terrace, Castle Cary, Somerset. The death of his father from cancer inspired him to found the Society for the Prevention and Relief of Cancer, (now known as Macmillan Cancer Support) to provide care for cancer sufferers. A quaker and a vegetarian, he wrote an open letter in 1909 called 'Shall we Slay' which encouraged Christians to follow his example. He was appointed MBE for his support to young civil servants during World War II. He died at his home Carylande, Ansford, Castle Cary, Somerset.
