Druid Street arch WW2 bomb

Categories: Tragedy

Druid Street arch WW2 bomb

Railway arches were used as air raid shelters in WW2, as they were relatively secure. In the case of Druid Street however, they couldn't survive a direct hit. Depending on source, the number of deaths in this incident ranges from 73 to 87. The photograph is of a shelter under a railway somewhere in south-east London.

2023: We were contacted by Shirl Thomas who gave us 3 additional names, which do not appear on the list of 73 names given on this plaque: "Alfred Dennis, age 31; Ivy R. Dennis, age 18; and their mother Annie Elizabeth Dennis, age 51." The list does include their sister Doris Dennis and their father also Alfred Dennis."
