Field Marshal. Born Dublin. Served in the Indian Rebellion and the Crimean War. Led the attempt to relieve Khartoum. 1895 - 1900 Commander-in-Chief of the British Army. The very model of the 'Modern Major-General' in the 'Pirates of Penzance' by Gilbert. Died Menton, France.
