Frank Wearne, VC

Soldier. Born Frank Bernard Wearne. He was a second lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion of the Essex Regiment. At Loos in France, he commanded a raid on the enemy trenches. Initially he was able to hold his position against repeated attacks, but when his left flank became exposed he leapt on to the parapet of his trench and ran along it firing and throwing bombs. Although becoming severely wounded, he carried on before eventually being killed. For his actions he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
