George du Maurier

Artist and writer. Born Paris. Punch cartoonist. 1894 wrote the novel Trilby, from which comes the term "Svengali". In Hampstead lived at 4 Holly Mount, moved to Gangmoor House facing Whitestone Pond, and then in 1870 moved to 27 Church Row. Father of actor-manager Gerald du Maurier. Grandfather of novelist Daphne. Died Oxford Square, near Hyde Park.

His maternal grandmother was Mary Anne Clarke, mistress of the Duke of York.
