George Neighbour

Died in the Arding and Hobbs fire. He was employed as a carver in the second floor dining room.

During the fire he had been seen assisting a young woman escape through a window.  "The floor was alight all round where Neighbour was standing, and just as the young woman disappeared from sight the floor gave way and Neighbour fell through. He had never been seen again."

At the inquest his name is given as Joseph George Neighbour and at least one paper gives his age as 37, not the 34 given on the plaque.

We have found no image of Neighbour so instead we have used a photo of the building in which he died - the original Arding and Hobbs.
