George Padmore

George Padmore

International activist and renowned pan Africanist (favouring the unification of Africa). Born Malcolm Ivan Meredith Nurse in Trinidad. Travelled a lot. but settled in London in 1935. Worked as a journalist. Richard Wright, who visited Padmore in Cranleigh House described him as an "old-fashioned Trinidadian gent, always impeccably dressed" in the kitchen, debating with his African friends as a "kettle hissed in the background". Moved to Ghana at the end of 1957 but died in London where he had come for medical treatment. Buried in Ghana.
