George Skanderbeg

George Skanderbeg

Albanian national hero. Born George Kastrioti (or Castriota) Skanderbeg and also known as Iskander Bey. The son of a prince of Emathia (Modern day Macedonia). At the age of seven, he was kidnapped by Turks and raised as a Muslim, becoming a favourite of Sultan Murad II. In 1443 he changed sides, renounced Islam and drove the Turks from Albania. He maintained his country's independence (with help from Naples, Venice and the Pope) until his death.
