Comedian. Member of Monty Python's Flying Circus. Born Leicester.
Began medicine studies in 1959 in Cambridge, where he joined the Footlights and began working with John Cleese. In 1962 he took up his clinical work at St Bartholomew's Medical College. In 1963 he performed for 3 months in a Footlights revue show, and then was offered a chance to go on tour with the show to New Zealand, which could not be combined with his studies. His decision was to defer his medical studies for a year. He toured New Zealand and Broadway with the Footlights show, returned, completed his studies and achieved registration as a doctor, but comedy claimed him.
His digs while at Barts were Dawson Hall EC1. Later lived at 89 Southwood Lane, Highgate and drank rather too "copiously" at the nearby Angel Inn. Died Maidstone General Hospital.
Note: (of which Barts is now part) has: "Barts alumnus Graham Chapman qualified in Medicine in 1962" which we think must refer to his first degree from Cambridge.
