Originally founded as the Halifax Permanent Benefit Building and Investment Society. In 1928 it merged with the Halifax Equitable Building Society and was renamed as the Halifax Building Society. In 1997 it became Halifax plc, and in 2001 merged with the Bank of Scotland to become HBOS, and is now (2025) a subsidiary of the Lloyds Banking group.
