Awarded the VC for his heroism on 9 April 1917, age 23, while serving in the East Surrey Regiment. "Although advancing over open ground under hostile machine gun fire he reached the trench and continued to hold that end of it with the Lewis gun. 100 prisoners and five machine guns were captured.
