Herbert Howells

Composer. Born Herbert Norman Howells at High Street, Lydney, Gloucestershire. He studied under Charles Stanford at the Royal College of Music and succeeded Gustav Holst as director of music at St Paul's Girls' School. Best known for his choral music especially the Hymnus Paradisi. Died at the Cintra Nursing Home, 7 Gwendolen Avenue, Putney.
