Humphrey Firman, VC

Seaman. Born Humphrey Osbaldston Brooke Firman in Kensington. In April 1916, British forces were trapped in the Siege of Kut in what was then known as Mesopotamia. Firman, in command of the ship Julnar, attempted to reach and deliver supplies to the besieged soldiers. The mission was thought to be suicidal, and only unmarried men were allowed to take part. The ship came under heavy Turkish fire and was eventually hit by a shell killing Firman. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery.
