Awarded the VC for his heroism on 31 August 1918, age 21, while serving in the Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment). "Twice he attacked machine gun posts, putting the first out of action and capturing eight prisoners in the second. He showed the utmost gallantry, conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. (Monchy-le-Preux, France)". Freemason at: â„–393, St David’s Lodge.
