Naval officer, administrator and trainer. Born Staffordshire. Defeated the Spanish fleet at the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1797. Recognised the potential of the young Nelson and brought him on. Initially they had a good rapport but a legal battle over prize money spoilt the relationship. Died at home in Brentwood, Essex.
