John Rae

John Rae

Arctic explorer. Born at the Hall of Clestrain, near Stromness, Orkney Islands. He studied medicine and became doctor to the Hudson Bay Company. From 1846 to 1848 he undertook several expeditions to the Arctic, one of these involved the search for the missing ships of John Franklin's expedition. In 1864 he made a telegraph survey from Winnipeg over the Rockies. Died at his home, 4 Addison Gardens, Kensington.
