John Shadgett

John Shadgett

Churchwarden, 1855.

Andrew Behan has researched Shadgett: John Shadgett was born on 25 October 1793 in Norwich, Norfolk, a son of William Shadgett and Ann Shadgett née Dodd. On 20 November 1834 he married Sarah Rebecca De Castro at Warfield, Berkshire. The 1850 edition of the Post Office London Directory shows him living at 1 Park Villas, south side of Canonbury Park North, Islington. and the 1851 census states he was living with his wife at the address shown as 1 Park Villas, Middle Road, Islington. His wife died on 23 January 1859 at Earls Terrace, Kensington.

The discrepancy in the addresses for Park Villas is explained in the 1860 edition of the Post Office London Directory that states he was living at 1 Park Villas, Canonbury Park North, sometimes known as Middle Street, Islington. The 1870 edition of the Directory confirms he was still at this address, but had been joined by the Reverend M. C. Shadgett. At some point he remarried as the 1871 census shows him living at 42 Atlingworth Street, Brighton, Sussex with his wife, Lucy H. Shadgett and a female servant. His occupation was recorded as a Fund Holder & House Proprietor.

He died, aged 79 years, on 13 April 1873 at 7 Compton Terrace, Islington and was buried in Islington on 19 April 1873. Probate records dated 4 August 1873 confirms that his home address remained as 42 Atlingworth Street, Brighton and that the executor of his will was Edward Ballard, M.D., of 7 Compton Terrace, Islington. His effects were shown as under £1,500.
