Lambeth Savings Bank

Founded at Lambeth Green in 1818. A shows 'The Green'.  It's not too clear where that was in relation to today's streets, just somewhere in the region of Kennington Road, Carlisle Lane and Hercules Road. The bank building must have been where the current railway line is because the arrival of the railway forced the bank to move in 1849 to Hercules Road, into the splendid building pictured here, which was (will they never learn?) built close up to the railway. So when the railway line was widened the bank had to move again, in 1903, to the freehold premises it bought in Kennington Road, which brings us back to the plaque.

In 1916 the bank merged with London Provident Institution and Bloomsbury Savings Bank to form the London Savings Bank, which went on to form part of TSB.

This image shows the Hercules Street bank with the National School - Boys (built as ) to the left. Both buildings are labelled on this , which also confirms that what is now Carlisle Lane was at that time Carlisle Street.
