The borough was formed in 1965 from the Municipal Borough of Uxbridge, Hayes and Harlington Urban District, Ruislip-Northwood Urban District and West Drayton Urban District of Middlesex.

Hillingdon's blue plaque program began in 2008 focused on commemorating heroes who were born or lived in the borough.
