Matthew Bell

Psychoanalyst who works near West Smithfield and is interested in local history.  He felt passionately that there should be a memorial where the denouement of the 1381 revolt took place and where Tyler fell. Up to this point there had been none.  It took him about a year of bureaucratic to-ing and fro-ing to get the go ahead from The City, St Bart's and English Heritage.

He commissioned Emily Hoffnung to design and carve the Great Rising memorial. And went on to arrange for the Rosa Luxemburg plaque and others, including a memorial to Benjamin Franklin in the Lady Chapel at St Bart's The Great (but inside so we won't collect it) unveiled on 13 December 2025.
