Although the Smithfield memorial does not specifically refer to them this dedication is intended to include the many Smithfield workers who died when a V2 rocket hit the market during the final days of the war in 1945. It landed on the north side of Charterhouse Street, near the junction with Farringdon Road. There was extensive damage to the market and to the railway tunnel below, and over 110 casualties.
