Morry Levy

Morry Levy

2026: Lyn Rennick, Levy’s niece, kindly sent us some information about Levy, as follows:

Morris Elijah Levy was a Stoke Newington councillor for 25 years. He was born at Mile End Old Town in 1912 to an unmarried mother Eti Lapidus. His father was Hyman Levy, a potential bigamist, hence my grandmother finding out in time before marrying him. Levy married Elizabeth Fox and had two sons, Lionel and Ben. He lived on the Hawksley Court Estate before moving to Queen Elizabeth Close. He fought in the Spanish Civil War and received one of the highest medals awarded at that time. Had been a Communist but later changed his views. Buried at Raleigh Jewish Cemetery.  His name appeared on the foundation/opening stone for the 1960s laundry built in Milton Grove (see Stoke Newington Town Hall).
