Mrs Patrick Campbell

Actress. Born Beatrice Stella Tanner in Forest House, Kensington. Her stage name was derived from her marriage to Patrick Campbell in 1890. She made her theatrical debut in 1888 and achieved fame in Pinero's 'The Second Mrs Tanqueray' in 1893. Her reputation was enhanced by her performances in many of the leading female Shakesperian roles. Success on Broadway in New York followed and in 1914 she created the role of Eliza Doolittle in Shaw's 'Pygmalion'. Died in Pau, France.
