Natsume Sōseki

Novelist. Born Natsume Kin'nosuke in Babashita, Japan. He was sent to Britain where he studied at University College, London. He did not enjoy his time here, describing it as 'living like a poor dog that had strayed among a pack of wolves'. Many of his works feature ordinary people fighting against economic hardship, and include 'Kokoro', 'Botchan' and 'I am a Cat'. This image shows his portrait on the Japanese 1,000 yen note.
