Netherlands Government in exile

Netherlands Government in exile

The Netherlands were invaded by Nazi Germany on the 10th May 1940. Queen Wilhelmina had planned to go to the southern province of Zeeland to co-ordinate resistance, but when it came under attack from the Luftwaffe, she was forced to accept Britain's offer of refuge. Relations between the queen and her ministers were tense and eventually the prime minister Dirk Van de Greer was replaced by Pieter Gerbrandy. A radio station was set up to broadcast anti-nazi propaganda to the Netherlands, with the queen being a frequent contributor, as shown in our picture.
