Oeuvre Nationale le Souvenir Belge

A Belgian non-profit organisation founded in 1968 whose name loosely translates as "Work of Belgian Commemoration".  We could find very little information: only this medal and the plaque on the memorial in St Mary's Cemetery.

The image on the medal (diameter 2.75") and on the plaque shows a widow placing flowers on a soldier's tomb, with other tombs in the background. The medal is signed by E. de Valeriola and looks as if it might be the Belgian equivalent of the British dead man's penny.

The obverse of the medal has the text: "A nous le souvenir, à eux l'immortalité. XI.XI. XI. Oeuvre nationale le souvenir Belge. 1914 - 1918" which translates as: "To us the memory, to them the immortality. 11.11.11. Belgian Commemoration", the '11's referring to the WW1 armistice taking effect at 11am on the 11th of November.

The organisation was apparently founded in 1968, long after the memorial was created and long after these 'medals' were issued, both activities that we would rather have expected to be carried out by the Belgian government. But perhaps the group existed earlier, in another form, and in 1968 there was some tax or legal need to register (no accounts have ever been submitted). If anyone can explain, please contact us.
