Peter Warlock

Born The Savoy Hotel, as Philip Arnold Heseltine. Peter Warlock was his pseudonym. Journalist, music critic and composer. His music was heavily influenced by Elizabethan and Celtic culture. Influenced by Delius and Bartok, amongst others. Instrumental in bringing Bartok to London for the first time in 1922. Lived in Wales for three years. His death at home from gas poisoning may have been suicide, but there was speculation that he was murdered. His father being a London solicitor we cannot discover why his birth took place at the Savoy.

This 1915 photo, taken by Ottoline Morrell, shows Warlock between Hasan Shahid Suhrawardy on the left and D.H. Lawrence on the right.
