Robert Byford

Robert Byford

Worked for the Royal Arsenal Co-operative Society. Was on the building committee for the Abbey Wood branch in 1912.

have this photo of Mr and Mrs Byford, at some sort of event - the woman between them is wearing a mayoral-like neck adornment. The caption there is punchy: "London couple celebrates Ruby wedding eloped 65 years ago. Married after an elopement in Canada 65 years ago. Mr and Mrs Robert Byford are celebrating their Ruby wedding at Plumstead, London Mr Byford, now 87 years of age, is a native of Romford, Essex. He emigrated to Canada in 1887 and worked as an engineer on the railways. there he met his wife, who was employed at a house in Hamilton. My Byford s temper aroused the opposition of Mrs Byford's mother, so the couple had to run away. I cured his temper in three months say Mrs Byford, who is now 84. Mr Byford worked at Woolwich Arsenal for 36 years until his retirement in 1912. Photo shows, Mr and Mrs Robert Byford, the ruby wedding couple, out for a walk {sic} in Plumstead. 12 May 1936."
