The Woolwich riverfront had been used as a dockyard and arms store for decades so having the foundry here made sense. Its construction was in response to a fatal explosion at Bagley's Foundry, just north of the City.
The Royal Brass Foundry was one of the 4 departments of the Woolwich Royal Arsenal. It manufactured artillery pieces. In addition to its casting functions, the new Royal Brass Foundry also originally held a vertical cannon boring machine used to finish the bore of cannons, which at the time were cast with a core.
The Brass Foundry was later renamed the Royal Gun Factory, and was allowed to decline over time.
