Royal Hospital Chelsea

Royal Hospital Chelsea

A retirement and nursing home for British soldiers who are unfit for further duty due to injury or old age. They are popularly known as ‘Chelsea Pensioners’.

Founded by King Charles II in 1682 and designed and erected by Sir Christopher Wren, who based his design on the . The first Chelsea Pensioners arrived in 1692. Female pensioners were first admitted in 2009.

The grounds of the hospital have hosted the Chelsea Flower Show since 1913.
