Royal Philharmonic Orchestra

Founded by Sir Thomas Beecham who conducted its first concert on 15 September 1946, in the Davis Theatre.

In its early days it became a profitable orchestra, playing for the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the Royal Philharmonic Society. After Beecham's death it went into decline, but survived after the Arts Council recommended that it should receive public subsidy. It now has a permanent London base, at the Cadogan Hall in Chelsea.
