Samuel Henry Gardiner

Andrew Behan has researched this man:
Samuel Henry Gardiner was born on 27 July 1832 in Newington, Surrey, the elder son of Richard Henry Gardiner and Eliza Gardiner née McCraw. His father was a Stonemason who subsequently went on to become the Superintendent of the Norwood Cemetery. He was baptised on 23 September 1832 at St Nicholas's Church in Deptford, Kent and the family were living at the time at Old King Street, Deptford. The 1851 census shows him living with his parents and siblings at 20 Providence Buildings, New Kent Road, Newington, Surrey and his occupation was shown as a Mason. On 23 September 1854 he married Jane Julia Woolverton at St Mary's Parish Church, Newington. The 1861 census shows him, his wife, four children and one female servant living at 1 Union Crescent, Southwark and his occupation was listed as a Monumental Mason employing 7 men and 1 boy. The 1871 census shows that the family had moved to 11 High Street, Norwood, Surrey and that he had increased the number his children to seven.

The night of the 1881 census shows his staying as a visitor to the home of Mrs Hannah Dyke and her two children at 4 High Street, Castle Cary, Somerset, whilst his wife and family, which had increased to eight children, were living at 9 Brayard Road, Peckham. The 1891 census shows him, his wife and two of his children living at 12 Pilkington Road, Peckham and it was here that he died, aged 59 years, in 1892. He was buried on 15 February 1892 in the Norwood Cemetery, Norwood Road, Lambeth.
