Sidney Godley

Soldier. Born Sidney Frank Godley in East Grinstead, West Sussex. Fought with the 4th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. He was awarded the first Victoria Cross of WW1, and was also the first private soldier to receive this honour. This was for his act of gallantry in defending the Nimy railway bridge at the Battle of Mons in 1914. Died in Loughton, Essex.
