Siegfried Sassoon

Siegfried Sassoon

Poet and writer. Born Siegfried Loraine (also spelt Lorraine or Louvain depending on source) Sassoon at Weirleigh, Brenchley, near Paddock Wood, Kent. Grandson of Thomas Thornycroft and cousin of Sir Philip. He was commissioned in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and posted to France in 1915. Nicknamed 'Mad Jack' because of his bravery and awarded the Military Cross. His experiences led him to write many anti-war poems, for which he is best remembered. Amongst his other works, is a biography of George Meredith. Died at Heytesbury House, near Warminster, Wiltshire.
