Sir Bernard Katz

Biophysicist and physician. Born in Leipzig. He came to Britain in 1935 and worked at the University College London (UCL). In 1938 he went to study at the Sydney Medical School. He joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 1942 and spent the war in the Pacific as a radar officer. Returning to Britain he became a professor at University College and lived for 3 years in Highgate. Died in London.

Noted for his work on nerve physiology; specifically, for his work on synaptic transmission at the nerve-muscle junction. In 1970 he shared the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine.
