Sir Henry Doulton

Sir Henry Doulton

Businessman, inventor and manufacturer of pottery. Born Vauxhall Walk where his father was a partner in a pottery business, Doulton and Watts. Followed his brother, John junior, into the business. Lived with his wife and daughter at 7 Stockwell Villas which can be seen on , on the east side of South Lambeth Road, south of Lansdowne Way/Road. But the street has been renumbered so we can't say which of these Villas was number 7.

Up to this point the Doulton pottery just made functional items in earthenware (sanitary ware, pipes, etc.). With the encouragement of John Sparkes, principle of Lambeth School of Art, Henry Doulton branched out into art pottery. He employed students from the School, including George Tinworth and Hannah Barlow. Then Doulton moved the firm into the production of china items and again was very successful.

Died at his London home, 10 Queen's Gate Gardens.
