Sir James Macnaghten Hogg

Politician and civil administrator. Born in Calcutta. The elder brother of Quintin Hogg. He changed his surname to Mcgarel-Hogg when he inherited his brother-in-law's estates. Served in the Life Guards and entered parliament in 1865. He became a member and eventual chairman of the Metropolitan Board of Works. During his tenure the board opened the Chelsea Embankment, purchased all the private bridges across the River Thames and freed them of tolls. Elevated to the peerage, he took the title Baron Magheramorne. Died at his home, 17 Grosvenor Gardens.
