Botanist and explorer. Born Joseph Dalton Hooker, son of Sir William, at Halesworth, Suffolk. He travelled widely around the world, bringing back many species of plants to Britain. Became director of Kew Gardens in 1865 and instigated the compilation of a list of all scientific plants 'Index Kewensis' which is still in use today. Died at his home, The Camp, Sunningdale, Berkshire.
