St Mary on Paddington Green

From : "The first parish church existed as a chapel before 1222. It was dedicated to St Catherine and stood on the same site. In 1678 the second parish church of Paddington was built – again on the same site – and its dedication was to St James."

The present building, the third, was designed by John Plaw with a Greek Cross ground plan, dedicated to St Mary and consecrated in 1791. Some of the compensation for the construction of the urban motorway Westway, alongside the church was used to restore the church to its original appearance. The adjoining St Mary's Churchyard was converted to a public park in the 1890s and is now known as St Mary's Gardens.
